Security and stability for critical infrastructures

Passive optical networks (PON) are the backbone of modern digital society. They form the basis for high‑speed internet, communication networks, and critical data connections—and are therefore classified as critical infrastructure (KRITIS). Yet this importance makes them a potential target for sabotage and manipulation.

To ensure high availability, network operators are required not only to monitor their infrastructure, but also to detect and prevent potential faults early through predictive maintenance. In addition to deliberate interventions such as sabotage, environmental influences such as humidity, temperature changes, or mechanical stress can also jeopardize network stability.

Our solution: NC FOMS – The fibre optic monitoring system.

NC FOMS enables comprehensive monitoring of the passive network infrastructure without additional external power supply. By integrating into the existing fiber‑optic infrastructure, the system remains particularly reliable and ensures maximum operational safety.

With the innovative “Power over Fiber” (PoF) technology, NC FOMS powers sensors directly via the fiber optic cable, enabling low‑loss power transmission over distances of up to 20 kilometers – efficient, sustainable, and reliable.

Features of NC FOMS

Basic Features

Detection of temperature, light intensity, humidity, air pressure, vibration, and movement.

Alerting, e.g. in the event of pressure drop, unauthorized access, or vandalism.

Interface for integration into monitoring systems

Additional Features

Advanced monitoring functions (including gas detection)

Smart
locking functions and
access controls

How to reduce operating and maintenance costs

Early detection of gradual wear and tear (OPEX)
Regular maintenance can be planned more efficiently because NC FOMS detects early signs of material fatigue or gradual damage.
Prevention of consequential damage through preventive measures (CAPEX)
By detecting issues in time, major damage to the fiber‑optic infrastructure is avoided. This protects against costly repairs caused by undetected defects.
Increased safety during construction work
Sensors detect damage to fiber‑optic lines already during construction work, before the excavation pit is closed. This avoids expensive rework and ensures network stability over the long term.
